EARL L. KUBIS
Earl L. Kubis became involved with photography while serving
in the U.S. Army, in Germany, in 1957.
In 1958, he joined the Downers Grove Camera Club and the
Chicago Area Camera Club Association, a large group promoting
photography in the Chicago and six county area, whose members
range from advanced amateur photographers to the working
professional.
In 1964, he became a charter student of the Famous Photographers
School. While working regular hours with the carpentry trade,
he devoted extra time to the course and, in 1969 after only
five years of study, he completed the course.
During this time, he invested in a pro camera system with
the purchase of two Leica SLR bodies and four lenses. He
joined Root Resources Agency and entered the stock photography
business, selling images to various publishers. While finishing
the FPS course, he entered two student contests sponsored
by FPS/Hartford Company and from the winning proceeds, more
than what the course had cost, he succeeded in getting two
images on Hartford calendars.
In 1975-76, forced to move by the state of Illinois' purchase
of right-of-way for an expressway, he designed and built
a new home, devoting the entire basement to a photography
career. This was Earl's plan in looking ahead towards retirement
from carpentry. With this arrangement, he was able to devote
more time to photography and build up a large stock of images,
both in black and white negatives and color slide transparencies,
where most sales to publishers are made.
In 19771, he was featured on Channel 2 in an interview by
Harry Porterfield which focused on people working at two
careers. He was video taped on construction sites and in
his new basement studio areas.
Earl comments on how quickly the years pass by when trying
to keep up with fast-changing photography technology, attending
professional seminars, yearly trips to build stock image
files, developing one's own programs to earn income by teaching
at schools and seminars, all while striving to achieve recognition
of his work and images.
